Description

    • With its nine floors, the new building invites the citizens to linger. The City Library at Mailänder Platz is nearly twice the size of the Wilhelmspalais, which used to contain the library.

In the middle of the building stands the “heart”, a 14 metres high room, which serves as a calm anchor and gives the visitors the opportunity to gain distance from the busy outer world.

The reading room is located directly above the gallery, from forth to eighth floor, and possesses the shape of an upside down-step pyramid. Another attraction is the huge roof terrace, which can be used in summer to take a book to while enjoying the view over the city.

The building envelope is designed as a double façade. The outer shell consists of glass bricks and exposed concrete. The inner shell is the actual façade and is made of glass. This way, on all nine floors emerged ambulatories, which lead around the building and can be used by the visitors. The façade is illuminated in blue at night.
