Description

    • On February 20th 2008 schneider + schumacher architects became known as the first winner of the competition for the extension of the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt am Main. "A shining jewel during the day, a carpet of light at night - the architects made something really special out of the extension to a successful museum“, says the jury report. In continuation of the historical continuum of space, the museum will be expanded through the foyer to the new exhibition rooms along a central axis. By reorganizing the entrance area and the public infrastructure, the entire building will be accessible barrier-free. With direct access to the foyer there are new exhibition spaces, room for special exhibitions and the administration; the Metzler hall and the library will be relocated to the West Wing. New showrooms for the art of the second half of the 20th Century will be placed in the "garden sheds" at the Stadel garden. The central space is determined by an elegantly curved and light blanket with round skylights. The arching of the roof is perceived as an integral part of the topography of the new garden, as some kind of land art, and can be used as an extended foyer on the outside. The compact design in the earthen areas, the heating and cooling, the air preheating / precooling and large storage mass is creating an optimal indoor environment with minimal energy expenditure. Frankfurt will not only receive a special and unique new exhibition building, but also a state-of-the-art 'green building'.
